Doc Henry’s Nursery

The nursery was a bit of a challenge. The room a 12’x12’ square room without a closet, so we had to make sure that the pieces didn’t overwhelm the room but also had enough storage for a child to grow into.  As for the style of the room, we came up with our “Modern Animal Cabin” theme after choosing lively illustrations and mimicking a log-cabin within the details of the ceiling, such as cedar box beams and tongue and groove boards.  We centered our design around forrest creatures which influenced a subtle yet masculine color palette consisting of greens, blues, and warm wood tones.

The centerpiece for the room (and our personal favorite) was the crib.  This particular crib is very special because not only did Skylar design it but he also built it by hand with traditional woodworking joinery.  It features close attention to detail with brass hardware, 3 positions, solid white oak, and a custom non-toxic finish in a warm brown.  The other pieces were designed to maximize storage while in-keeping with the crib’s simple lines.  The armoire contains ample toy storage and adjustable shelving that can later be removed as the child’s clothing gets larger.  It features the same finish for the door fronts and a non-toxic Milk Paint finish for the rest of the piece.  Wooden toys were converted into drawer pulls for a touch of whimsy and warmth.  We then focused our attention to a simple changing station, which can easily transition into a dresser once the top is removed.  Lastly we added elements from a few of our favorite local children’s shops and modern baby brands (i.e. Bla Bla Kids, Baby Braithwaite, and Seed Factory) to complete the nursery.  What are your favorite items?  Do you have any of these pieces in your nursery?  Let us know in the comments below!  Photography by Andrew Thomas Lee
